Coates 1989 RHINEFIELD, modern parish carved out of Brockenhurst Hypothetical Old English/Middle English 'Rygefeld'='rye open land'. Gover suggests that the first element may really be the Old English adjective 'rygen'='rye grown', but forms in '-n' do not appear till the late 15th century (1490 'Rynefeld'). A Middle English origin for this alternative formation is therefore certain: hypothetical Middle English 'Rienfeld'. Later irrelevantly associated with either the 'rhines' or drainage ditches of the Somerset Levels or the European river. |
